complex flowers and lacy, deeply divided rich green foliage. Abundant large, showy flowers of white and lavender are produced all sum- mer. Flowers are followed by egg-size edible yellow fruit. Although the vines freeze to the ground each winter, the plants are root hardy to -20˚F and will regrow, flower and fruit the following season. Called ‘Maypop’ because it pops out of the ground each May (sometimes June).

One of the hardiest of the pseudobulbous terrestrial orchids. Flowers are short-stemmed, about 2½ to 3 inches wide, lilac-pink with tubular lips that are lighter and mottled with brownish-pink. Produces offsets freely. Has withstood -4˚F making it suitable for garden culture in warmer areas.

POLIANTHES Size: 10/12cm P. tuberosa “Tuberose” Famous for fra- grance and a popu- lar cutflower since the 16th century, tuberoses are still widely used in the florist trade. Native only to Mexico, the tuberous bulb-like


plants send up two to four 24 inch spikes carrying up to 30 fragrant white flowers. The waxy flowers, often 2 to 3 inches in diameter, are carried in pairs. RHODOHYPOXIS Top Size


Despite being native to South Africa, this great little plant is fairly hardy, probably because it is usually found at eleva- tions of 4000 ft. and higher. The plants are noted for their flat, pointed, hairy leaves which are produced in early spring. The 1 to 1½ inch star-shaped flowers bloom from June into August.
