TREE PEONIES Favorites of Greek gods and Japanese emperors, there are few plants that can rival the beauty of a tree peony in bloom. These rare jewels
of the peony world reach their mature size in 5 to 8 years and should be planted in
an area protected from drying
winds. In Northern regions they enjoy full sun, but Southern areas should provide light shade from their hot, midday sun. Our tree peonies are domestically grown and are well-estab- lished plants shipped in 1 gallon pots. [Ht: 3'-5', Bl: Late spring, Zones: 4 to 8, S/ SSH]

P. polyphylla #SPA05
This rhizoma- tous plant from the lily family is a rare find for those inter-
ested in alpines. Native to the cool-growing mountain
regions of the Himalayas, India and Chinia, the slowly spreading perennial sends up erect, smooth stems, each bearing a whorl of 6 to 12 slender, pointed, 3 to 7 inch green leaves. Above this whorl of foliage a yellow-green spider-like flower opens consisting of 4 to 8 outer tepals up to 4 inches long and thread- like 4 inch inner tepals, along with numerous yellow stamens. The flower may last up to 3 months, ultimately displaying spherical ¾ inch green capsules which split when ripe in late summer to reveal shiny red seeds. The plant is an interesting curiosity which many gardeners like for its rather bizarre flowers and elegant foliage. Occasionally the above ground parts of the plant may not appear for a year.
