L. speciosum Top Size Speciosum translated means “good looking,” “showy,” “splendid” and “brilliant,” all aptly describing what many consider to be the most beautiful of all Oriental lily spe- cies. Once established it will grow up to 6 feet tall and bear as many as 30 richly fragrant, pendant, 6 inch flowers. Twisting, recurving tepals nearly meet at the back of the bloom while the prominent stamens thrust forward. One of the last lilies to flower putting on a fabulous display in August and September. Prefers humus rich, acid soil. From Japan, introduced in 1832.

L. tigrinum var. splendens #SLY40 Size: 18/20cm “Tiger Lily.” A robust stem-rooting lily native to China, Korea and Japan familiar for its generous flowerheads of unscented, recurved, 5 inch, orange-red flowers decorated with dark purple spots. Has dark purple hairy stems scat- tered with lance-shaped leaves and noticeable purplish-black bulbils in the upper leaf axils. Easy to grow, thriving with minimal care. Native to the Himalayas, this late flowering species bears up to 4 exceptionally fragrant, outward-facing slender white trumpets with a suggestion of green. Each petal is 6 to 12 inches long resulting in blooms of spectacular size. A real character, this plant produces stem bulbils underground and tends to wander, creating some surprises when the stem often comes up some distance from where the bulb was planted.
