This native of European and Asian woodlands is related to dutchman’s breeches and bleeding heart. Its masses of fern- like leaves and showy clusters of delicate flowers lend a graceful note to lightly shaded areas in rock gardens, along paths or slopes and in crev- ices on rock walls. The somewhat tubular flowers, rarely over 1 inch long, have a distinct spur that projects backward, and bloom in large clusters. They grow best in cool-season areas and may go summer dormant in hot tempera- tures. In warmer climates, plant in dense shade or near moving water.
