How to choose? | So many varying factors make for diffi cult decisions

There are often restrictions on the types of investment permitted – for example, often excluding real estate – and remember that most of these permits do not allow you to work. Of course, in almost every case there are other requirements to obtain the permit, such as being able to show that the funds invested are ‘legal’ and that you do not have criminal convictions. Most countries also require proof of medical insurance. You do not always need to invest in order to be able to live in a country. Many other countries allow people to live in the country, without making any investment, if they can show they have suffi cient income to support themselves. Of course, many people will be looking to make an investment – often to put at least some of their money in a

‘safe’ place or to guard against currency fl uctuations. In this case they need to ask themselves how safe is the country where they are placing their money? How safe is the investment itself? Is it likely to produce a reasonable yield: will the income it generates each year meet your requirements? Is it likely to rise in value?

As for any investment, it is worth taking advice to make sure that you know what you are getting and the risks you are taking.

If you are thinking of moving overseas – or even buying a ‘Plan B’ property so that you can do so in future if you wish to do so – you should take professional advice from someone who is an expert in the fi eld. This will save a lot of wasted time, effort and money.
