DECEMBER 2012 More resorts for Maldives
BY ALAN ORBELL THE Maldives' tourism authorities are to release a further 14 islands for resort development according to the country’s Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor. “The islands are leased under very strict
conditions but we want to further diversify tourism to the north and south of the Maldives islands and have started that in the south with the opening of the new Gan International Airport in Addu Atoll.” Although China is now the single leading supplier of tourists to the Maldives, the Minister said that 75% of international visitation is still from Europe. “We will continue to market and invest in Europe.” Following the opening of the UNESCO biosphere reserve for whale sharks, the Maldives’ President has declared that the whole of the Maldives can be a biosphere
and has targeted tourism authorities to achieve this by 2017. Although naturally positioned as a beach destination, the Maldives’ new masterplan promotes greater diversification including more domestic airports, more guest houses and more liveaboard boats says the Ministry of Tourism’s Deputy Minister, Mohamed Maleeh Jamal. “More and more tour operators are
showing interest in these and they’re a very affordable way to visit the Maldives, especially for surfers and divers. They’re a good way to really experience local culture and the local population.” As well as the existing three times a week
British Airways service, Maldives is also served by SriLankan, Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways plus, from last month (November) Turkish Airlines and FlyDubai.
