Middle East Dubai is a perennial favourite with British holidaymakers, Abu Dhabi’s appeal continues to grow while Oman is also winning over travellers. Meanwhile, Egypt is looking to rebuild visitor numbers. Gold Medal Assistant Product Manager Deborah Wadhams said: “The Arab Spring has not really affected Gold Medal’s business in the Middle East and we have seen a recovery this year. Dubai continues to be a strong performer; it’s a great all-rounder that appeals to singles, couples and families. Fantastic hotels and tactical offers are driving really solid numbers. “We’ve seen growth in Abu Dhabi on the back of Yas Island, the Grand Prix and many new leisure facilities and Ras Al Khaimah, due to very competitive pricing and all-inclusive options which are becoming increasingly popular in the UAE.”
TOURISM TALK
OMAYMA EL HUSSEINI Director UK, Egyptian State Tourist Offi ce “The positive this
year is that we are done with the elections and the political uncertainty – the country is back on a stable road. “The UK market this year is not
doing badly at all. We are less than three per cent down on January- September compared to last year; we are talking about 750,000 tourists. Last year for the whole year it was 1.036 million. Our best year was 2010, when we had 1.2 million. We think we can get back to 2010’s fi gures in 2013. “We are pushing for the classical
market now promoting our 10 classical heritage hotels.”
NABEEL MAHMOOD AL ZAROUNI Acting UK Country Manager, Abu Dhabi
Tourism Authority “The UK market is still the best overseas market for us. Overall worldwide we saw a 15% increase in arrivals in the fi rst nine months of the year compared with last year. We are aiming for a 15% increase from the UK for the year end. “We recently held the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix and have a new water park which opens at the end of the year – Yas Water World. It is going to be the biggest in the UAE. “The Rosewood Abu Dhabi hotel is opening next year along with several more hotels. We are aiming at 24,000 rooms by the end of this year with another 5,000 next year.”
