Ecuador steams ahead in luxury

BY ANDY HOSKINS A new luxury rail journey will begin operating in Ecuador next summer, travelling from the Pacific coast high into the Andes. Over $250million has been invested in the government- operated Cruise Train which will operate four-day/three-night itineraries with rack rates under $1,000pp, including accommodation. “It will be the most beautiful, luxurious journey in Latin America,” says tourism advisor to the Ecaudorian government, Patricio Tamariz. The route travels from Guayaquil to Quito through sugar cane fields, banana plantations and cloud forest into the Andes, stopping off at haciendas, Indian villages and other sites along the way. Tamariz also revealed the country’s

new ‘I discovered Ecuador’ marketing campaign and named adventure, culture and ecotourism as focus areas for 2013. “We have ancient civilisations in Ecuador – it just hasn’t been well promoted yet,” said Tamariz, “and we are the most diverse country per square metre in the world.” A new international airport in Quito opens in February and, with the longest runway in Latin America, is set to open up the country to larger aircraft and new routes. Visitor numbers to Ecuador have doubled since 2004. www.ecuador.travel
