PROFILE City ST. JOHN’S Colourful

C

olourful experiences, colourful characters and colourful encounters. St. John’s has them

all and it’s a recommendation your clients will be glad to receive.

St John's WHERE IS IT St John’s is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is the most easterly point in North America and that has its advantages. It has its very own time zone, is the first province in Canada to see the sun rise and is one of the warmest – being on the same latitude as Seattle and Paris.

St John's GETTING THERE Air Canada offers seasonal direct flights from Heathrow to St. John’s. This is the closest province to Europe, which means flying times are fast - just five hours. St. John’s harbour is also a regular safe haven for transatlantic cruise travellers too.

St John's WHAT’S THERE Newfoundland and Labrador is the youngest – and many say ‘coolest’ – province in Canada, yet St John’s is home to the oldest street in North America and has been welcoming adventurers from all corners of the world for over 500 years. It has a buzzing cultural life which combines traditions with eclectic sophistication and is perhaps best know for its famous row upon row of multi-coloured wooden townhouses.

Along with being the main port and

capital, the city has an international airport, several thousand hotel beds and a compact waterfront downtown, choc-a-block with nifty shops. It has scores of pubs and restaurants to ensure a vibrant nightlife and cultural scene in which music, theatre, dance, crafts and the visual arts thrive. Here visitors hear plenty of tall tales and yarns, but will also encounter fashionistas, chefs, musicians, and a modern vibe. Beautiful vistas, culinary pleasures, and unique architecture are all part of the

urban experience here and the colourful characters and many live performances make magic memories. There are museums too, devoted to transport, wine, geology, pharmacology, and nursing to name a few. Visitors can also see where Marconi received the first trans-Atlantic wireless signal, where Alcock and Brown took off on the first successful airplane flight across the Atlantic, and where the French and British fought the last battle of the Seven Years’ War.

St John's GETTING AROUND The walking trail system around the city is among the best in the country and takes in lung-busting treks up hilly streets to tranquil parks and streams.

St John's WHAT’S NEAR For any visitors thirsting for adventure, it’s easily quenched here by skirting the dramatic coastline nearby. Head out on foot or enjoy a boat trip complete with humpback whales, puffins, or icebergs (and maybe all three!). St John’s is the

seabird capital of North America, home to puffins, gannets, storm-petrels and so recommend to birdwatchers.

St John's WHAT’S ON In late July and early August the city hosts half-a-dozen events – including an historic rowing regatta. The annual folk festival brings thousands to a city park during the first weekend in August, and there is a chamber music festival, a jazz festival and a buskers’ festival.

St John's DID YOU KNOW Every year, the world’s largest migrating population of humpback whales visits the east coast of Newfoundland to frolic, feed, and dance in the Atlantic Ocean. St John's is a top viewing spot.
