YOUR TURN BEFORE & AFTER Stefan Lombard 1960 FORD GALAXIE STARLINER

PRICE RANGE: $21,000 – $62,000

Whether your tastes run toward big Americans or little Europeans, there’s always a car for you

Joseph Schaefer of Pennsylvania drove his first Starliner to col- lege in 1960. Though his dad ordered it, Joseph used his summer wages to upgrade it to the 360-hp model. His girlfriend at the time liked the car — and Joe, too — and the couple soon married. Fast forward 50 years, and the Schaefers were looking for a fun retire- ment project. They found a rough Starliner in Iowa, then spent two years bringing it back: new paint and a rechrome, fresh interior, complete engine rebuild and rewire, brakes, suspension … the works. The Schaefers will soon celebrate their 50th anniversary and look forward to keeping their Starliner in the family.

1957 BMW ISETTA 300

PRICE RANGE: $12,900 – $38,100

Richard Ranch of Tacoma, Washington, has always liked odd cars. One day, a gentleman in his Model T club arrived at his house in a BMW Isetta. “Picture a little old man in a suit and tie driving a spaceship,” Richard says. “That’s when I knew I had to have one.” He paid $3,000 for one on the other side of the country, and then treated it to a no-expense- spared restoration, all to original specs. While he could have found a nice driver for a quarter what he put into it, he wanted some-
