GRAY AREA

I want to repaint my MGA in the factory color Dove Grey, but every Dove Grey car I’ve seen looks slightly different. How can I be sure to get the true factory color?

Since formulas vary from

manufacturer to manufacturer, and even mixed paint can darken over time, it’s always best to scan a paint sample from a car that you know has the color you’re looking for. Owners are often willing to make their car — or a part — available for this simple procedure, and a quick scan can be done at many auto body supply stores and body shops. Obviously, you first have to locate an MGA with the factory-correct paint you’re looking for. The North American MGA Register (namgar.com) is a great place to start, as is any restorer who specializes in MGAs.

If you were purchasing the car

from a stranger, we would suggest having a mechanic give it a good once-over before agreeing to a deal. But since you’re familiar with the car, and you seem convinced there will be no surprises, treat it like any other automobile that’s been in hibernation: Check the air in the tires; check all fluids; inspect the engine compartment, interior and trunk for rodents or pests; and reconnect the battery. Then take it for a gentle drive and test the brakes, steering, lights, horn and wipers. Once you’re sure that everything is working properly, enjoy your new ride.

When is factory-correct paint not factory-correct paint?

I’m thinking about buying a 1966 Pontiac Catalina from a friend. It doesn’t have any me- chanical problems, but it’s been sitting in storage for six months. If I decide to pull the trigger, what would you suggest I do to get it ready to drive?

Where can I get windshield wipers for my Mercedes-Benz 190SL?

A number of discount and wholesale businesses offer replacement blades for Mercedes- Benz 190SL models, which were produced from 1955 to 1963. But since this likely won’t be the last time you’ll need a replacement part, we suggest using a business that specializes in your marque so you can develop a relationship with people who know your car best. Try the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center at 866-MB-CLASS (866-622-5277), mercedes-benz- classic.com or MBClassicCenter on Facebook.
