SHORT SHIFTS Q&A WITH...
Renée Crist, Collections Manager at LeMay — America’s Car Museum
HCC: How did you get into cars?
RC: I have always loved cars. When I was very small, my dad let me “drive” our 1949 Chevrolet on back roads. I was hooked. My brother, who was 11 years older, had a 1955 Chevy in high school that he worked on constantly in our garage. I wanted to be around him whenever I could, so I was his tool- fetcher and brake-bleeder. And then I discovered Steve McQueen in “Bullitt” and “Le Mans.”
HCC: What have you owned?
RC: I get really attached to my cars, and I tend to keep them a long time. My first car was a used 1965 Volkswagen Bug I bought when I was 17. I still own it. I used the win- nings from a network TV game show to buy my first NEW car (what else would I buy?) — a 1979 Mazda RX-7. Currently in my garage in addition to my VW is a 1958 Cadillac Coupe DeVille (mild custom) as well as a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham.
HCC: How did the job at America's Car Museum come about?
RC: I was a volunteer at LeMay- ACM for a few years. Then I sold
my photography business of 22 years and the museum offered me a posi- tion making use of my experience and collector car knowledge to work part time with the collection. A little later I stepped into the Collections Manager position.
HCC: What have been the biggest challenges in your role there?
RC: The logistics of moving the main part of the collection from our interim facility to the new museum was like planning a military invasion. Receiving and placing all the cars in the building exhibits was the next challenge, which had a very exciting outcome.

Cool car-themed board games are few and far between. Which is why it’s great to see Carnology,
a visual game of car identification where players must guess the make, model and year of a car in order to score points and navigate the board. Let’s face it, every car geek plays this game out in the real world anyway, whether alone or with friends. So why not make it official and add it to the ol’ game night rota- tion? And with a range of 525 cars from 1901 to 2012, you’re sure to encounter plenty of the cars you know, as well as enough stumpers to keep you coming back for more. To learn more or to order, go to

GRIOT’S GARAGE CAR CARE TIP: NO STREAKING!
Chasing down the final streak or two when cleaning your windows is never a fun task. This quick tip should ease your pain. When cleaning your windows, use a top-to-bottom stroke on the outside of the glass and side-to-side stroke on the inside. That way you’ll know which side of the glass needs a little more attention based on the direction of the streak.
