NewsWeek Boeing chalks up landmarks
ACCORDING to US aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing, the first delivery of a B787 ‘Dreamliner’ built at its North Charleston, South Carolina plant to Air India has signalled a new era of commercial air- plane production in the state. Work began at the Boeing
South Carolina Final Assem- bly and Delivery Centre in 2009 and production on the first South Carolina-built B787 began in mid-2011. This first completed
Dreamliner only rolled out of the factory’s doors in April, yet the facility is now planning to increase final assembly pro- duction to three a month by the end of 2013.
Final assembly of some
B787s also takes place at Everett, Washington state. The transfer of this B787 to
Air India actually represents the 28th Dreamliner delivery to date and, in another new development, the first com- mercial flight of a Dreamliner operated by LAN Airlines recently marked a new age in Chile’s aviation history. LAN has become the first
airline in the Americas and the fourth in the world to receive and operate the new B787.
This aircraft is expected to
initially fly to Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital, 22 times a week, with destinations such as Los Angeles, Lima, Madrid and Frankfurt being added over the course of its first year of operation. As the first commercial jet-
liner to be made primarily of advanced composite materials, Boeing says that it boasts 20 percent better fuel efficiency than other aircraft in its class, with 20 percent lower carbon emissions.
