Nine teams of travel industry athletes and their fans joined a fun-packed and informative Dragon Boat Day hosted by Selling Long Haul and sponsored by the Hong Kong Tourism Board and the Macau Government Tourist Offi ce.


The teams, competing in 13 races, included agents and suppliers hosted by Marriott Hotels, British Airways, Funway Holidays, Travel Uni, Cathay Pacifi c, Advantage, Ocean Marketing, Shangri La Hotels and Cosmopolitan Hotel/Destination Asia. The event was held at the London


Regatta Centre and brought a little taste of Hong Kong and Macau to Docklands with the evocative dragon- headed boats encouraged on by traditional rhythmic drumming. Star rowers on the day were the British Airways team, with the Funway team taking the wooden spoon. The races were followed by a relaxed Chinese buffet and fun quiz on the destinations. THE CHALLENGES Encourage clients to stay longer! While many will happily include it as a one- night stopover it is important to stress the diversity and range of activities available. Most who stay longer are happy that they did.


THE APPEAL Beyond the great markets, designer shopping and the 11,000 restaurants, Hong Kong also has a strong portfolio


of cultural activities and sightseeing attractions.


THE OPPORTUNITIES Hong Kong should be an easy sell. There are lots of competitively-priced hotel offers and airlines often include the city as a stopover for very little or no extra charge. It is a unique destination with the chance of some memorable excursions, like an iconic trip on the Star Ferry or a ride up Victoria Peak in the Peak Tram. Remember, Hong Kong can also be a good place to start or end a cruise so be sure to recommend it to those who prefer holidays afl oat too. Next year a new cruise terminal will open.


Macau in Context Macau is just 40 miles from Hong Kong and can be easily reached by ferry in an hour. It is great in combination with Hong Kong as a twin-city break, or with mainland


China. THE CHALLENGES


The main challenge with Macau is that clients have very little understanding of what is there. Those who have heard of it generally know it for its casinos – but there is so much more.


THE APPEAL


Macau is a unique mixture of Chinese and Portugese cultures and has a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage- listed Historic Centre and diverse calendar of annual events.


THE OPPORTUNITIES Macau will appeal to a wide range of clients, from those seeking adrenaline activities – such as bungy jumping and high-roller casinos to culture seekers interested in historic sites and the stunning water-show at City of Dreams.
