WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Stops on the day trip include businesses that are environmentally responsible, farm or create all their products locally, have an ethically sound business model, and in the case of food and wine producers choose organic, biodynamic, sustainable and/ or free-range principles. Travel 2 has introduced a Swim with Whale Sharks experience. The day trip from Exmouth includes snorkelling on the inner Ningaloo Reef and a swim among the whale sharks. Priced from £273pp (including a photo CD & lunch) the trip runs daily from mid- March to July 31. Perth is unusual among Australia’s major cities in that a clutch of new hotels are opening. Welcoming guests since July is The Terrace Hotel, an art deco heritage-listed property dating back to the 1920s and with heritage- listed 15 luxurious suites. Quincy Boutique Hotel, a new fi ve-

storey, 56-room inner-city hotel, has an intended opening date of November 2012. The boutique accommodation owned by Australia Pacifi c Hotels is being built behind the existing Perth Ambassador Hotel on Adelaide Terrace. The former Citigate Perth hotel is

being totally refurbished and will become Four Points by Sheraton. James Packer’s Crown Limited has announced the development of a new “six-star luxury hotel” to be known as Crown Towers Perth. The new 500- room property, which will expand the existing offerings at the Burswood Entertainment Complex, will be Perth’s largest hotel when it opens in 2016. Qatar Airways started a Doha-

Perth service in July and will up the frequency to daily from December.

Tourism Talk CHRISTIE LORD

Regional Manager UK, Tourism Western Australia

“We are highlighting the many extraordinary things to do in the state – from swimming with whale sharks on the Coral Coast to outback experiences in the Kimberley. Perth should be seen as just a starting point and certainly doesn’t represent the whole holiday experience on offer. Campervan and motorhome companies are doing really well at the moment. They offer a way for clients to control their budgets but also means they will

be visiting more local markets and farms, to buy local produce. “We had a very successful UK road

show series this spring and will build on the back of that in terms of the trade training we will be doing. We will repeat the road shows in 2014.”

Ask the Operator CLARE HAYNES

Product Manager Premier Holidays “Even though we don’t

have the demand for WA like we do for the other regions, three-quarters of Premier Holidays’ Australia team have been to Western Australia and are passionate about selling it. They love working on a Western Australia itinerary as they can really use their tailor-made skills. It can be quite an expensive holiday but we can guarantee that clients will return overwhelmed by the region.”
