BY ALAN ORBELL THE 1,190 islands of the Maldives recorded an increase in arrivals of 17.6% in 2011 taking the total to 931,000. The first quarter of this year saw a 3.3% increase and the Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation is now hoping to hit the one million tourist target later this year. Access to many of the southern islands has now become easier following the opening of the new Kooddoo Airport in the Gaafu Atoll with twice-daily 45-minute Maldivian flights. CARIBTOURS has expanded its range for 2013 adding Puerto Rico and more all-inclusive properties in response to a surge in demand.
