THE EUROPEAN Commission has responded with disbelief to moves by the US to comply with a World Trade Organisation (WTO) subsidies ruling. “We had expected that the US
would have finally complied in good faith with its international commit- ments and would have abided by the WTO rulings that clearly con- demned US subsidies to Boeing,” said EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht. "We are disappointed that this does not seem to be the case.” De Gucht said the lack of infor- mation provided in the US compli-

the EU has “indications the US could have actually granted more il- legal subsidies to Boeing in the meantime” and has asked the WTO for the right to impose US$12 billion a year sanctions in retaliation. In a statement, the US plane-
maker said while it fully supports US government actions, “the same can- not be said of Airbus and its govern- ment sponsors, which have thumbed their noses at the WTO. Despite a
crystal clear ruling against launch aid subsidies, European governments have continued the practice by pro- viding Airbus with billions of tax- payer euros and pounds for its next new product, the A350. “What is more, the European gov-
ernments have yet to remove the very substantial subsidies, including those propping up the A380, which the WTO's ruling in June of last year re- quires them to do. “The illegal subsidies to Airbus,
most importantly the pernicious, market distorting practice of launch aid, must stop,” the company de- clared.

other hand, the Euro- pean Commission claims the WTO found illegal subsidies of $5-6 billion to Boeing between 1989 and 2006 and a further $3.1 billion after that period. A WTO panel is currently hearing
the case against the EU for its lack of compliance on its ruling. Meanwhile De Gucht wants an early meeting with his US counterpart “to insist on proper compliance before the World Trade Organisation.”
Ethiopian becomes first African B777F operator
ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES took delivery of its first B777 freighter on 20 September, becoming the first African carrier to operate Boeing’s fuel-efficient, mid-sized aircraft. The B777 freighter is being leased to the Addis Ababa-based airline from GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS). “We are not only becoming the first African carrier operating Boeing’s 777 freighter, today
we are also taking our cargo operations to a new level and into a new era,” said Tewolde Ge- bremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. “As the largest African cargo carrier operating in some of the fastest growing trade lanes in
the world – between Africa and Europe, the Middle East and Asia – the new 777 freighter fleet will significantly enhance our tonnage and range capabilities,” Gebremariam pointed out.
