18 METALCON SHOWGUIDE 2012 I www.metalconstructionnews.com Educational Sessions Seminars

You’ll learn why this movement toward sustainable building enclosure sys- tems, addressing thermal and moisture protection, and system maintainability, has caught the attention of savvy owners, architects and general contractors. These decision makers want one go-to solution for entire building envelope systems including roof, wall, and fenestration—and architectural metal con- tractors can fi ll that need. Participate in this session to learn how you can be part of this exciting shift in market awareness.

E05 Tired of Your Roof From Hell? Sponsored by The Metal Initiative

Chuck Howard, P.E., President, Metal Roof Consultants Inc., Cary, N.C. Scott Kriner, LEED AP, President, Green Metal Consulting Inc., Macungie, Pa.

Tired of dealing with the “roof from hell”? This program is designed for you. Led by two experts in retrofi t roofi ng, this course will show building owners, developers and maintenance supervisors how to turn a roof into an asset with a return on investment rather than being a maintenance nuisance. Learn how metal retrofi t roofi ng can address common failures associated with conven- tional roof materials and understand some of the specifi c benefi ts of metal retrofi t roofi ng. Retrofi tting with metal roofi ng introduces many sustainable features of the building envelope, as well as offering opportunities to improve energy effi ciency. Retrofi tting a roof can allow a building owner to add more insulation, introduce convective cooling, lower solar heat gain, and add several types of renewable energy sources and can even help to reduce potable water usage. Information on converting a fl at roof to one with slope as well as retrofi tting existing sloped roofs will be shared. Video testimonials from build- ing owners that have used metal roof retrofi tting will provide additional items for consideration. How to determine life cycle costs and the benefi t of using life cycle costing will be demonstrated. The design fl exibility of retrofi t in walls will also be mentioned. This comprehensive session also includes an owner/ supervisor open forum with a panel of additional experts in metal retrofi t roof- ing and wall applications.

Chuck Howard, P.E., is a licensed professional engineer and has been designing, building and consulting about the use of metal in new and retrofi t markets since the 1970s. In his presentations, Chuck speaks from his educa- tion as an engineer, his experience as a contractor and his background as an author and speaker about the subject of retrofi t. He has been associated with nearly 30 million square feet of metal roofs and has been making metal roof presentations for more than 25 years, including the fi rst METALCON in 1991 and most of its subsequent conferences.

Scott Kriner, LEED AP, is president of Green Metal Consulting Inc. He serves the Metal Construction Association as technical director and is a consultant to manufacturers and suppliers of metal roofi ng and wall systems. Scott is a con- tributing author to print and online trade publications and a published author of a book titled “Wait and See.” Previously, Scott worked as technical marketing manager-building products for Akzo-Nobel Coatings Inc.; in Bethlehem Steel’s coated steel research department; and other positions in the domestic and international metal and coatings industry.

Scott also has held numerous positions of responsibility in industry and trade organizations. He is the founding chairman of the Cool Metal Roofi ng Coalition, and serves as chair of the Cool Roof Rating Council’s Technical Committee. He serves on the Advocacy Committee of the Lehigh Valley Branch of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, is a member of the ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability, and a board member of the Roof- ing Industry Committee on Weathering Issues (RICOWI).
