Replacing keys with mobile phones

Mobile phones can replace mechanical keys and access cards and open doors to homes, hotels, offi ces, hospitals, universities, industrial and commercial buildings

S

eos, from the lock manufacturer Assa Abloy, is a commercial ecosystem for issuing, delivering and revoking digital keys on mobile

phones with NFC technology. With Seos, mobile phones can replace mechanical keys and access cards, opening doors to homes, hotels, offi ces, hospitals, universities, industrial and commercial buildings. Home-owners can send temporary digital keys to visitors, handymen

and babysitters from their own mobile phones. Issued keys can be revoked through the same interface. Hotel guests can check in and out with their mobile phones and receive digital hotel room keys even before arriving at the hotel. In offi ces and commercial buildings, access to rooms and cabinets can be managed centrally. For even higher security, Seos digital keys can be protected by mobile phone PIN codes. Seos is based on open standards and works with all standards-

compliant NFC mobile phones. Multiple Seos digital keys for a variety of different locks can be stored on a single mobile phone and will remain active even if the phone is turned off or out of battery power.

Its functions include an SOS panic alarm to warn of an incident or problem and auto-answer to enable offi ce-based operators to open a communication channel with a Ctrack Ice2 unit when an employee cannot be reached. With its intelligent reporting modes, the device can either update location

data at fi xed intervals or automatically increase the update rate when move- ment is detected. Ctrack Ice2 provides real-time and

historical location data to monitor the whereabouts and safety of a remote workforce. In particular, safe or no-go zones can be created to ensure that employees remain inside, or out of, an allocated area. Unauthorized move- ments will trigger an alert. Employees can use the device to

make and receive calls to and from up to 20 predefi ned numbers, which can be remotely managed.

Tablet PC for Airwave service users

R

ecently added to the Airwave

accessories

catalogue is the TETRAtab C Series, a combined tablet and notebook computer which addresses the needs of front-line workforces, especially in fi re and rescue services (FRSs). The C Series is a

standalone machine that facilitates data on the move

in a similar way to demountable mobile data terminals (MDTs). John Lewis, chief operating offi cer at Airwave, said: “A few months back we added two demountable MDTs to the accessories catalogue so that crews working away from the fi re appliance still have access to vital information on the ground. The C Series now gives FRSs the option of a free-standing device.”

The machine is rugged and light in weight. It has a hardened case, is drop and splash proof, and dust resistant. Its high-defi nition touch-screen can be used tablet-style with an on-screen keyboard or handwriting feature, but can quickly fl ip back into a traditional laptop-style keyboard.

Airwave has initially chosen to offer the 3G/GPRS variant but is considering other options, such as inbuilt Tetra.
