For example, Poundbury, part of the Duchy of Cornwall’s estate in Dorset, has recently benefitted from the addition of a Waitrose convenience store, successfully completed by main contractor Longcross. Longcross worked with the team at


Waitrose to create a sustainable store design and delivery method in order to secure planning permission for the store. The team completed the award­winning, BREEAM excellent store with the use of sustainable construction practices and by planning longer­term operational sustainability for the store, which was opened by HRH Prince Charles the Duke of Cornwall. The growth of convenience retail shows a


real shift in the way we make small purchases. Tim Ellis, New Business Manager at Momentum Instore, believes

that the fact that larger multiples are getting involved in this sector shows the importance of convenience stores to the retail environment that we live in; “Consumers today, partly due to time pressures and possibly also motivated by rising petrol, parking and travel costs, are increasingly doing some of their shopping close to home. In fact, more people now use convenience stores twice or even three times a week.” With popularity of convenience stores


growing, keeping on top of the latest practices is essential. Making sure that the customer experience is as simple and efficient as possible is the key to success, especially in an environment where multiples are coming to the fore as serious competition for smaller retailers.
