Conference Preview By Andy Stout

Sport is the engine of television, driving technology on the one hand and revenues and business models on the other, so it’s entirely appropriate that it occupies its own place on top of the podium in the Conference on the Saturday of the show. IBC will be the very first place to assess the winners – and possible losers – following an incredible summer of both sport and innovation. It kicks off with a keynote

from one of the men with one of the hardest and best jobs of the Summer, Roger Mosey, Director of London 2012 for the BBC. This will be the first major post-Olympics forum held, and it will give the audience a chance to see him compare notes with a distinguished international panel, and recount the highs and lows, the challenges and triumphs of

broadcasting the world’s biggest sports event. What worked, what didn’t? What was a success, what would he do over again if he had the chance?

IBC audiences attending ‘The London 2012 Debriefing: Analysing the Summer Olympic Games’ (8 September 2012, 09:30 – 11:00) will be treated to a complete analysis of how it all went down behind the scenes. It is followed by ‘Turning Olympic Games Spectators Into Participants: Broadcast Tools & Technology Of London 2012’ (8 September, 11:30 – 13:00) which is one of the first occasions technology companies involved with the Games will have to emerge from behind their NDAs and talk about what they did and how they did it. It will examine the technological innovation used to bring audiences deeper than ever into the Olympic action, including 3D, Super Hi-Vision, web distribution, and large scale

It’s a session that feeds well into ‘Brazil 2014: The Road To The Next FIFA World Cup’ too (8 September, 14:00 – 15:30). After London 2012, this is the next major global sporting event on the calender. Goal Line

Technology has already been greenlit for the tournament, and this session will look ahead at what else is coming as it details the technical, logistical and economic challenges in producing the main event in the world’s favourite sport.

Where tomorrow comes alive By Chris Forrester

IBC’s impressive Future Zone is already on most people’s ‘must visit’ areas. For a start it has been the regular home for Japan’s NHK and where they showcase their Ultra-HDTV theatre and screens. This year’s demo from NHK will include breathtaking images captured in 8K from the London

Olympic Games, as well as the very latest 8K displays. Visitors will want to see for themselves how NHK, and their EBU, BBC and other broadcasting and technology partners expect U-HDTV to evolve over the next few years. The progress made towards a workable 8K system in the past 12 months is notable. It isn’t just that

camera technology or transmission technology has improved, it is also a fact that standards bodies are well ahead in their work. Within the Future Zone NHK is also exhibiting a fascinating ‘ball camera’ with a 360 degree field-of-view that’s almost bound to be of appeal to sports and other large event broadcasters.

Indeed, these revolutionary elements sum up what IBC’s Future Zone (located outside Hall 8) is all about. Exhibitors, such as NHK, and those who use the Poster areas to demonstrate often visionary concepts, welcome visitors to see the results of their research.
