Dear Residents, Make Our Parks YOUR Backyard
It’s been an exciting summer full of special events, programs and summer camps…all happening in your own backyard! Some of the highlights thus far include the Veterans Memorial Pavilion Dedication on May 22 and the kick-off of the Family Concert Series in Fishel Park. The 35th Annual DG 5 Miler took place on June 24th with over 450 runners competing in the CARA Runners’ Choice Circuit race. Over 4,200 kids have taken part in summer camps at the Lincoln Center, Museum, Lyman Woods, Golf Club and several of our park locations. And the McCollum Park Infrastructure Renovation Project has been completed including ball field and soccer field upgrades with terraced seating, pathway improvements, new picnic pavilion, irrigation system improvements, additional parking, permanent restrooms and new concession area. McCollum Park is the largest park in our community and we are excited to have these new amenities available to our residents and visitors.
Make plans to join us at another of our flagship parks, Patriots Park/Barth Pond, for one of our last events of the summer season, the Annual Fishing Derby. Youth age 16 and under and their family are invited to come out and play on August 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for a chance to reel in a big fish. Of course, you don’t have to be a kid to play. The Adult and Senior sections of this guide highlight a myriad of opportunities for continued learning, socialization and travel. Choose from trips and tours, arts & dance, culinary classes, music lessons, photography, gardening, CPR and more. There is also a new Active Adult Center week-at-a-glance page so you can plan which days you want to participate.
As you begin making back to school plans, don’t forget to register your son or daughter for the upcom- ing fall/winter youth sports leagues including soccer and basketball and take advantage of the early bird fees. If you have a preschool-age child, the Lincoln Learning Center Preschool program for children ages 2-5 begins in September. Guided by Illinois Early Learning Standards and NAEYC practices, the Lincoln Learning Center offers a well-rounded, play-based curriculum enriched with nature education at Lyman Woods, culinary arts in the newly renovated, onsite culinary kitchen, and physical education with onsite gymnasium, park and playground.
While you are enjoying our community centers, you can now get connected with free Wi-Fi service. Learn more about what the Park District has to offer by browsing the interactive digital Guide at www.
dgparks.org and register instantly through the convenient online registration system, REC Connect.
Come out and play in YOUR backyard! Sincerely,
Bob Gelwicks, Park Board President Board of Park Commissioners
Working on behalf of residents are the five elected members of the Board of Park Commissioners who serve unsalaried four-year
terms. The board sets the priorities and defines the policies for financing, governance, operation and administration of the district.
The Downers Grove Park District was created in 1946 as a special unit of local government when a group of citizens envisioned the establishment of a park and recreation system to serve area residents. The Park District’s mission is to provide a wide variety of year-round recreation programs, facilities, parks, open space and natural areas that respond to the articulated needs and desires of residents.
