Stage Lighting

Taking Centre Stage

Lighting plays a key role in creating the right environment for entertainment events. We shine a spotlight on some of the biggest names in entertainment lighting.

Lighting has always played a key role in any stage performance, and in recent years the potential of lighting has developed considerably. This has lead to a real increase in the use of lighting as a central focus.

Czech Republic-based Robe were

recently the exclusive light fixture specified by lighting designer Avi Yona Beuno for a new production of Carmen at the 2012 Israeli Opera Festival, which was staged at the charismatic location of the foot of Masada Mountain by Israel’s Dead Sea.

Over 150 Robe fixtures were chosen for their robust performance in the tough operating environment of the desert, where dust, wind and heat all take their toll. 82 Robe ColorSpot 2500E ATs and 32 ColorSpot 1200E ATs were positioned on two large side-stage gantries and a box truss at the back of the front-of-house control positions right at the top of the main seating grandstand. Stage lighting can be a difficult task, especially on a project with as exciting a setup as this location. Avi Yona Beuno chose Robe because he knew the lights would give the power and intensity needed to cover the long throws, which were up to 80 metres to the stage. The stage itself was 55 metres wide and fielded all the action and passion of Bizet’s work presented on the hugely dramatic ‘bare-stage’ set design created by William Orlandi.

and night scenes, lit in shades of amber and colour temperature whites and blues. Avi Yona Beuno explains that one of the reasons he likes working with Robe is the company’s willingness to listen to Lighting Designers like himself and produce special requests. “I have a lot of time and respect for Robe” he says “They are really trying to understand how people can work creatively with their products”.

Lighting Designers will usually have a very specific vision for any project, so a willingness to listen and respond to requests will always be appreciated.
