improve the visitors’ experience or highlight the architecture.” Sutton Vane Associates recently worked on a project for the National Museum of Ireland’s Treasury Gallery, where a mosaic floor was removed tile-by-tile and renovated. The lighting had to be installed in a way that would ensure that the mosaic could be replaced entirely undamaged and preserved. At the same time as the mosaic was restored, the museum also installed display cases lit with fibre optic lighting. The fibre optic lighting passes through small holes in the floor. All tiles where holes have been placed have been retained, so that they can be put back in the future. Sutton Vane Associates worked with the case fabricators, the architect and curators to locate

the cases to match with the architectural features. LED fittings put a soft glow on the floor and precisely highlight features of the mosaic.

Replacing the lighting in a listed building can often be an enormous task. Megaman were recently called upon by Cardiff Council to aid in the refurbishment of the lighting at Cardiff Castle, a large and daunting task, as the Castle is one of Wales’ leading heritage attractions. Castle staff, together with the Council’s energy management team, decided to replace all the light bulbs with energy saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and LEDs. Unlike previous energy saving lamps, the new lamps have been designed to fit in with the interior and show its architectural features and

artworks in the best possible light. Of the 415 light bulbs in the house alone, 117 are contained within the chandeliers in the Banqueting Hall, making the

change over difficult. Megaman supplied a combination of 5W LED Clear Candle lamps, 8W GU10 LEDs, 15W AR111 LED’s, GU10s and 18W CFL GLS lamps for use

throughout the project. The LED lamps run at 5W each, rather than the 25W filament lamps, and are expected to last around 50 times longer than traditional bulbs. Buildings become listed because they have specific architectural or historic significance. These buildings are important, and lighting needs to be tailored so that it attracts attention to the building, and not to itself.
