CREAT ING AN ATMOS PHERE

Now that we’re well and truly into the summer months thoughts are turning to holidays. As such, we decided to take a look at some exciting new hotel projects to get us in the mood!

Hotels are all about providing comfort, and lighting can play a large part in ensuring that the welcome at a hotel is warm and inviting. Lighting can also enhance an atmosphere and accentuate architectural features to make a hotel look even more spectacular.

MEGAMAN® were recently involved in lighting Scandic’s high profile Victoria Tower Hotel in Stockholm, which is the tallest hotel in the Nordic countries. Designer Gert Wingårdh is said to have been inspired by a sequin dress when creating this dramatic statement building. With an eye to the future, Scandic

required that the hotel be as energy efficient as possible, and, thanks to the inclusion of MEGAMAN® innovative lamp technology, the hotel is assured a saving of over €300,000 and 175,000 kg CO2 over the lifespan of the lighting installation. This is based on replacing 500 x 35W halogen lamps with 700 x 7W PAR 16 GU10’s (LEDs) running 24 hours a day in corridors, replacing 700 35W halogen lamps with 700 x 7W, GU9, CFLs running for 2 hours a day in bathroom mirrors and replacing 400 x 100W incandescents with 400 x 23W E27, CFLs running 24 hours a day in corridors. lighting company Flos, and the results are stunning. Throughout the hotel’s corridors and other public spaces, 900 bespoke luminaires, including both downlighters and wall fittings, have been designed to include MEGAMAN®’s LED PAR16 7W GU10 reflectors with 35 degree beam angle, delivering 600 cd beam power, and MEGAMAN®’s LILIPUT PLUS 23W E27 CFLs, ensuring that the hotel is lit beautifully and efficiently whatever the time of day or night.

In addition, 700 of MEGAMAN®’s GU9 Series of 7W CFLs have been used throughout the hotel’s bathroom mirrors. By choosing MEGAMAN®’s LED and CFL lamp technology, rather than halogen equivalents, the hotel achieves significant savings on lighting running costs per year. When you arrive at a hotel, looking up at the external façade is the moment you make your initial impression of where you are staying, and well-designed lighting can help to make a building look utterly majestic. The Corinthia Hotel in Whitehall Place, London, has a wonderful Victoria Belle Epoque exterior, spanning Whitehall Place, Northumberland Avenue and Great Scotland Yard. The exterior lighting, which was designed by Lighting Design International, makes the hotel truly stand out in its setting. With very low surrounding ambient light
