What is it? Take the Olympic sports of swimming, cycling and running, replace the road bike with a MTB and the road run with a brutal off-road course, and you’ve got Xterra. Off- road triathlon races include a 1.5km swim, 30km MTB and 11km trail run across terrain ranging from tropical jungles
to snow-covered mountains. Why do we want it? Triathlon in itself is an exciting sport, as newcomers will see when Britain’s Brownlee brothers Ali and Jonny go head to head for gold in Hyde Park this summer. Taking it off- road adds even more drama. Who would win it? Australian Ben Allen won the first three World Tour races of 2012 to make himself favourite for the world championships in Hawaii this October. He says: ‘Last year, in my first year of Xterra, I did a race in the Amazon. Swimming with piranhas and running through the jungle with anacondas and some of the deadliest spiders in the world was an awesome experience. And it was my first World Tour title.’ Top tech: Xterra’s own XR1.0 shoes use grippy pads on the sole, a bit like a big cat’s paws, for maximum grip. And while most trail running shoes are heavy, XR1.0 uses a mix of suede and mesh to provide support and protection without weighing down feet. Did you know? 2011 world champion Michael Weiss was recently banned for two years for doping offences dating back to 2005. Watch: Seven-time Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong tries Xterra at
