A highly versatile Integrated Racking System from storage specialist Polypal is now at the heart of the latest DIY trade outlet opened by Stax in Leith, Edinburgh.

The premises include some 25,000 sq ft of sales and storage space with over 240 selling bays that comprise a

combination of display areas and replenishment stockholding. The optimum use of the available space was a key requirement fully met by the Polypal design. Nigel Wright, Stax Operations Director, explains: “Working closely with Polypal’s designers, we opted for a standard bay width of 2.67m with an overall height of 6m. Each bay consists of a merchandising window to a height of 2.3m and either one or two storage levels above in each case. The versatility of the Polypal concept means that we can easily reconfi gure each bay to suit the changing needs of specifi c ranges – from Integrated Gondola bays for multi- product displays to heavier duty bays to accommodate building materials.” Back-to-back and perimeter bays are also now installed at the site arranged across six aisles, each some 20 bays in length. A central access aisle eases movement around the premises for fork lift trucks – the specifi cation of which was also a key area where Polypal’s extensive experience in the industry was provided. “Additionally, the company was able to work closely with our electrical contractor, Connect2, to ensure the optimum choice of both bay and point-of-sale lighting was made,” adds Nigel Wright.

Austrian 3PL supplier JCL Logistics is enjoying the benefi ts of an automated handling solution designed by KNAPP that enables it to meet the B2B and B2C demands of its clients in a fl exible way.

Active in the freight, logistics and e-commerce sectors, JCL

Logistics has more than 60 sites across 25 countries. JCL recently invested €18.5m in a 50,000 sq m distribution centre in Werndorf, Austria, which acts as the logistical hub for customers in central Europe. The facility – which ships more than 28m articles of clothing for retail stores (B2B) and about 3.5m items for direct customer orders (B2C) per year – features automated handling systems from the KNAPP Group, including overhead conveyor systems from its subsidiary, Dürkopp Fördertechnik.

Flat-packed items are placed into plastic totes, which are then transported to KNAPP’s OSR Shuttle automatic storage and retrieval system (ASRS). The OSR Shuttle, with its retrieval capacity of 1,000 totes per hour, forms the heart of JCL’s order picking operations. The system features an independent shuttle on every level of the storage cube, served by dedicated lifts at the aisle ends. Containers up to 35kg are stored two-deep in two aisles with 23 levels, giving a total of 15,000 storage locations.

The DC also features a fully automatic hanging goods area with a comprehensive

overhead conveyor solution and individual item tracking and sortation. www.knapp.com
