Logistics consultancy Davies & Robson has completed a successful warehouse optimisation project for award-winning consumer electronics fi rm Armour Home.
Following the merger of
Armour Home’s Electronics and Alphason Design business
units, the company recently consolidated its warehousing activities into a single facility in Wigan. With margins tight and competition fi erce within the consumer electronics market, Armour Group commissioned Davies & Robson to ensure the merged warehousing operations were effi cient and effective and, in particular, could meet throughput and service expectations leading up to the Christmas peak trading period. Particular challenges included the differing business processes, remote sales and purchasing teams, poor product recognition, multiple communications channels and a lack of accurate management information. Davies & Robson undertook detailed process mapping and investigation as well as a review of the shift patterns and performance of the warehouse. A number of recommendations were made and introduced including standardisation of business processes and implementation of revised receipts, put away and picking processes to minimise handling and errors within the warehouse.

Dürkopp Fördertechnik has completed a new hanging garment facility for Debenhams’ warehouse in Yorkshire. This is the second system that Dürkopp has installed for Debenhams, and follows the success of a similar system put in for the fi rm in Northampton in 2006. Dürkopp’s modular set carrier system provides Debenhams with an effi cient solution to receive, store and dispatch hanging garments sold through their network of 170 stores in the UK as well as their highly successful Internet and International Franchise Partner businesses. The set carrier has a length of 500mm and weighs less than 0.5kg, but can be loaded with up to 20kg of hanging garments. These can be used singularly or in interconnecting trains so the operator can move a large quantity of items with ease. Empty carriers can either remain on the rail system, stored in a buffer area or removed from the rail completely when not needed. All components, including multidirectional switches, crossings and inter-fl oor conveyors are designed to operate with minimal input from the operator.
The installation covers c.180,000 sq ft for receiving, picking and marshalling and 180,000 sq ft for storage over two fl oors with capacity to more than double the storage capacity as future demand requires. Stock moves between the levels on automated inter-fl oor conveyors.

Gap Inc. to use TGW Retailer
Gap Inc. has
selected TGW, a leading integrated logistics solutions and material handling equipment provider, to install an automated material handling system in the company’s Southern
distribution centre, located near Nashville. Currently, Gap’s process of picking single items is labour intensive and relates to a disproportionate amount of its operating budget. The TGW solution will eliminate the need for standard each picking and automate case handling, providing a goods-to-person approach which will double the overall productivity of each worker. In selecting TGW, Gap wanted a provider with experience in apparel distribution.
“We conducted a thorough search and knew that TGW was a worldwide leader in AS/RS technology,” said Kevin Kuntz, VP Gallatin Campus, Gap Inc. “TGW’s creative and partnership approach to the design of the system, combined with the depth and breadth of their product offerings and knowledge of our business meant we weren’t limited to one type of solution. With TGW, we were able to explore many options before selecting their STINGRAY shuttle as it was the only solution that could offer us direct carton handling and meet our throughput requirements.”
