Young Knitter of the Year

Rowan were proud sponsors of the Clothes Show Live awards last year, and we caught up with winner Hannah Sayers, who picked up the Young Knitter of the Year award.

About me I am 17 years old, born in Essex but have spent the last 7 years living in Norfolk. I am currently studying for A-levels in Chemistry, Biology, Textiles and Maths. I live at home with my mum, dad and younger sister. I have a pet snake called Splodge, a Bearded Dragon called Buttons and two cats.

Where did you hear about the CSL awards, and what made you decide to enter? I heard about the awards from my textiles teacher; she told the class about the upcoming Clothes Show and offered us an opportunity to submit pieces for the young knitter of the year competition.

Describe the inspiration behind your piece I was inspired by a vintage plate, one of many that my teacher had brought in for us to look at; it was a plain white plate with flowers and vines all over it.

What other projects have you been working on since the awards? At the moment I am working on a piece for my textiles exam. It’s inspired by my pet lizard; I am going to knit a panel to embellish a corset top, in a lace pattern to reflect the look of scales.

How did you feel when you found out you’d won your award? When I first heard my name being called as the winner of the award, I just couldn’t believe it. I was happy just to have got into the final of the competition and was overwhelmed at winning.

How did you become involved in designing? I’ve always been interested in designing outfits on paper when I was younger, so when I got the chance to study it at GCSEs then at A- levels I was very pleased. To be honest I love to study textiles and it has always been a hobby of mine.

What are your plans for the future? I haven’t really decided on my future career yet, so at the moment I am just concentrating on finishing my A-levels before I decide on my next steps.
