Take a closer look at mohair

Created from the hair of the Angora goat, mohair is a beautifully silky fibre, which is both durable and resilient. In addition to these qualities, mohair is also celebrated for its ability to insulate and retain heat, meaning it can be superbly cosy and warm when knitted up.

The nature of the mohair fibre develops with the age of the goat; where the fine hair from younger animals is used for yarn and clothing, and as the hair becomes thicker, it is used for carpets, or heavy fabrics intended for outerwear. For example, the mohair content of our Kidsilk Haze yarn is made up from the very fine hairs of the kid, yielding an exquisitely soft touch.

Mohair blends exceptionally well with other fibres, such as wool, and is often used in winter garments and accessories to create warm garments, which still remain relatively lightweight. The fibre also absorbs dye amazingly well, meaning rich vivid colour palettes can be achieved. Mohair also makes beautiful, intricate accessory designs, due to its fine quality and high natural lustre.

At Rowan, mohair is one of our most loved fibres, and can be found in the following yarns: Kidsilk Haze, Kidsilk Creation, Kidsilk Haze Stripe, Colourspun, Silk Twist, Cocoon and Kid Classic. Click @ to visit our yarn range pages, and see the colour palettes for yourself!
