the move toward tablet and mobile devices.” Allegro’s Decision Metrics component released earlier this year has been delivered and is designed for use with tablet devices. “Gartner has noted that Allegro has one of the most advanced architectures in the Leaders Quadrant – and we intend to stay in the forefront,” [Allegro]. “It is no longer acceptable to
be working off yesterday’s P&L and market exposure. To gain a competitive edge, traders require real-time P&L and risk capabilities – to make the optimal profit from activities. Our systems are real-time, and our customers see a live P&L at all times,” [Aspect]. The ability to crack the ‘big
data’ problem will become a key differentiator between vendor products in the future. “With a global move towards smart metering and smart grids, there will be an exponential increase in the amount of data available to the power and gas industries in particular. An ability to process big data and rapidly turn it into usable business intelligence will be a differentiator for energy and commodity businesses going forward,” [Contigo].
Moving Forward “We believe the future of CTRM
technology is in simplifying its application structure through graphical workflows based on best practices for commodity trading companies. Our vision is to build a fully scalable, configurable, multi- commodity platform that can be sold and deployed by indirect channels much like SAP collaborates with implementation, sales and training partners,” [Aspect]. The “like SAP” relates to how their
massive partner network is able to sell, integrate, deploy, build and train in connection with the SAP platform. No E/CTRM system today can be deployed without a deep understanding and expertise of the specific product, and can usually only be sold and implemented by the product vendor’s team, or by very few, large, costly, identified consultancies.

For Contigo, the market for a pure ETRM platform is becoming
blurred. The potential market for E/CTRM systems is widening with an expanding range of companies, brokers, market makers, retailers, and small generators needing increasingly sophisticated, audited and secure trading software platforms to manage the buying and selling of both financial and physical commodities. “These type of companies gain great benefit from using an
ETRM solution, but even as recently as two years ago, wouldn’t have considered an implementation due to issues of cost and complexity. This makes the ETRM market more exciting to us, and presents opportunities to deliver a whole range of interesting solutions to different types of companies operating in the energy business,” [Contigo].
An ability to process ‘big data’ and rapidly turn it into usable business intelligence will be a differentiator
“Our vision is to continue to leverage our service oriented
architecture and Cloud delivery which was built with a scalable vision in mind. “The future for simplicity begins through the decomposition
of our existing business applications into discrete, granular components. By configuring a series of component applications, common activities, best practice business processes and workflows, companies are able to access an application personalized to their business. They’re able to create an experience they can truly refer to as ‘MyAspect’ – which is unique to their company,” [Aspect].
VENDORS ARE RESPONDING to market dynamics. More volatile commodity prices and market complexity have resulted in users of commodities across the board upping or initiating hedging activities. Increased oversight of markets and participants by stakeholders and regulators has resulted in an increased onus on risk management in all its forms. Industry issues and trends are driving these changes in the CTRM software market and extending the definition of this software category and expanding its borders. For companies that still rely on spreadsheet-based or legacy in-house developed systems (or older CTRM deployments) the level of capability in today’s commercial CTRM software – as exemplified by those companies detailed here – can dramatically improve their ability to manage the business more effectively. •
