trade approved skip-weighing system, it was simply not possible to show most customers the exact weight of their scrap metal when it was collected. “Most customers have to rely on estimated weight when an operator comes to collect the skip. They then have to wait for a weight ticket or receipt verifying this. Considering the rapidly rising market value of scrap metal over the last year, this is far from ideal. “One analogy that I like to use is that no company would hand someone a bag full of £20 notes, tell them to take it off site, count it and then report back with the total a week later. Yet this is exactly what some organisations do with their scrap metal. The Sureweigh system allows us to trade on facts and figures, which can be verified instantly, on site, for a totally transparent transaction. “Customer’s producing recycled material also need to accurately report this, as part of their environmental management report- ing – so they must have a verified weight.” Skip weighing also removes the ele-

ment of guesswork involved when it comes to comply- ing with legislation. An audible alarm will sound if the skip is too heavy, ensuring that skip operators do not overload their vehicles, but can still carry an optimum load. The Sureweigh system has an easy to use display that shows the weight of the skip. Tickets can be printed in the cab, enabling skip operators to provide receipts on the spot for a more transparent transaction and faster invoicing. The system can also download data onto a PC or transfer it via Bluetooth. The indicator has weighing routines for delivering an empty skip, collecting it when it is full and for changeover. As well as recording the gross and tare weights, you can enter the customer’s name and skip ID and the device will automatically date and time stamp each transaction. Other records can include vehicle registration number and consecutive numbers for traceability. Sureweigh can be retrofitted to existing

vehicles with minimal downtime. You can purchase it as a legal for trade system or as a basic system, which you can then upgrade to a legal for trade system at a later date. The skip weighing system is suitable for virtually any make of truck with either fixed or telescopic arms. Digital load cells replace the chain hangar bracket in the saddle of the skip arms, so the arms can move without affecting the results. There is no cabling since the load cells communicate with the indicator wirelessly. Regular D cell batteries, that can be pur- chased in most retail stores, power the load cells. They are easy to replace and will last between 4 to 6 months. ■
