PAUL ENOCH Production Manager
My employment at S&G started back in August 1988 as a young skinny teenager with attitude. My level of maturity soon changed in-line with my personal vision of where I wanted to be moving forward Over the years I have gained valuable experience throughout all areas of print production. Starting firstly in plan–up and then onto the bindery, where I spent 4 months on secondment. This time spent was both valuable and rewarding giving me a complete overview of the entire finishing operation – from folding, binding, stitching and mailing.
I returned shortly after to print production where I have remained ever since. I thoroughly enjoy the commercial and magazine set up with commercial giving a variety of specifications from basic single colour
print – spot colour mixes with die-cutting, foiling and lamination.
I thrive on being part of an interesting management team where the true “teamwork” ethic is paramount to the success of the S&G brand. I remain assertive with plenty of ambition and strive towards further development and personal goals. I enjoy a challenge and remain proud of the end result. Having been with S&G for 23 years I have witnessed many changes, typical of print one would say. My personal praise goes out to Andrew Jones for continuing investment in both people and technology which has enabled us to stay ahead of the competition with a real passion for success. It’s very much a family feel at S&G where everything and everyone’s point of view counts. My training has been both interesting and thorough. There is complete
respect for each and every function within S&G. People are an investment not a hindrance. The current senior management team is testament to the efforts and control over the years with both internal and external training programmes coming to fruition with over 100 years of combined service. My long term vision at S&G is to become Production Director having gained all the necessary knowledge within the organisation and therefore demonstrate key attributes for success in this arena. I have been married to
Helen for nearly 17 years with three children resulting in a busy lifestyle with plenty of taxi service. I am a firm believer of work hard and play hard. No gain is achieved without true effort. I hope I can enjoy many more years of employment at S&G and achieve further goals in the future.
MIKE DONOVAN Technical Manager
I started at S&G as a 16 year old, the place was full of weird and wonderful characters and felt like an extended family I was amazed that all the older people were so willing to spend time with me and show me how things should be done. They made it all seem more like a craft than a job and took great pleasure in making things perfect. I started on the guillotine and six months later I moved to the planning department and became a film planner. The training I received was pretty intense and repetitive, but 20 years on I can still write up folding impositions despite not having the need to do so for over a decade. The four year
apprenticeship flew by and as the business grew I was soon looking after trainees myself. I did courses at Cardiff University on image scanning and desktop publishing and within four
years I was working in the repro department. I spent most of the next few years training clients how to supply PDF files and developing our workflow. As the Pre-press manager the Company developed me with internal and external management courses and provided me with a mentor – it was Andrew Jones – so no pressure at all!
Since then my career development saw me progress to Client services manager, overseeing the pressroom, pre-press and customer services. Being a self-confessed “Nerd”, the Company changed my role to my current one three years ago. I now spend my days looking after Navision our enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, the Company’s colour management and all our online publications. All three areas were new to S&G and the Company has been supportive and patient with the development, providing a large budget with
