transport costs tackling

with Mike Fullalove AS THE COST OF FUEL AND OTHER VEHICLE CHARGES CONTINUE TO RISE, WE ASK OUR FACILITIES MANAGER MIKE FULLALOVE HOW S&G ARE ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE

PRINT, WHICH DEALS WITH A PHYSICAL PRODUCT, NEEDS TRANSPORTATION AND THIS IS GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE THANKS TO RECORD FUEL PRICES. HOW HAS S&G COPED IN THE PAST FEW YEARS WITH THE RISES IN COSTS OF TRANSPORT?

The rise in the cost of fuel has been a cause for concern for every company not just printing companies. We have tackled this rise in cost in an open manner by making it clear to our customers the element of delivery cost in all their jobs.

WHAT SORT OF MEASURES HAS S&G TAKEN TO CUT THE COST OF TRANSPORT?

As we cannot control the price of fuel we try to make savings elsewhere. We do this by ensuring that we have multi drop offs for every delivery route and that every route is planned well in advance to make sure it’s the most cost effective delivery route.

WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO CURB THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF TRANSPORTING GOODS?

Every new vehicle we have at S&G has an Eco stop/start system and all commercial vehicles have either Euro 4 or

Euro 5 engines to control emissions. These help reduce the amount of time the engines are spent idling, thereby improving fuel economy and reducing emissions.

IS POOLING DELIVERIES WITH OTHER LOCAL BUSINESSES AN OPTION, AND IF SO, HOW EASY IS THIS TO DO?

This is not usually an option for us as we use our own fleet of delivery vehicles for our deliveries. Therefore we can plan ahead and ensure that we are as efficient as possible for every delivery. Wherever possible with jobs, we try to source delivery with the Royal Mail or other large distributor companies.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO MONITOR HOW VEHICLES ARE BEING DRIVEN? We have a monitoring system in place. This allows us to remotely check where our vehicles are 24/7 and also how they’re being driven. Drivers are given regular updates on their personal performance. This also acts as a security measure as we are able to track how deliveries are progressing.

IS OUTSOURCING DELIVERY TO A THIRD PARTY AN OPTION FOR S&G? IS IT CHEAPER OR MORE EFFICIENT THAN HAVING IN-HOUSE STAFF?

Depending on the requirements of the delivery we will utilise third party companies to

undertake multi drops. We keep the in house option for priority deliveries.

FINALLY, HOW DO YOU SEE TRANSPORTATION IN THE PRINT TRADE CHANGING OVER THE NEXT FIVE TO TEN YEARS?

We will continually look at utilising the latest vehicles to reduce our costs over the years. However costs will continue to rise unless the Government take action against the constant increase in the price of fuel and other charges including congestion and toll roads.
