S&G IS RENOWNED FOR INVESTING IN PEOPLE ESPECIALLY THEIR POLICY OF RECRUITING APPRENTICES, IS THIS HOW YOU STARTED YOUR CAREER AT THE COMPANY?
I left school after passing my A Levels then worked in the business for a year where I spent time in every department. In October 1980 I went to Watford Printing College and studied for a BSC in Printing and Technology. However, during my Christmas break in 1980, my father asked if I wanted to continue my studies in college or learn hands-on in the industry as he needed someone to run our type setting company Crown Photosetting. I decided to take up my father’s offer and began
my managerial career. He sort of sold me a dummy as he hinted that there may not be a job for me at the Company when I finished my studies!
WHAT MAKES S&G DIFFERENT TO OTHER COMPANIES
IN THE INDUSTRY? We have a “can do” attitude and have had for a long time. We have the best people, the best equipment and best ethos to take the business forward.
WHAT CHALLENGES LIE AHEAD FOR
S&G? Our biggest challenge is the continued onset of digital media. We don’t know the end prognosis regarding paper products, however, I strongly believe there will always be a need for printed products.
HAVE YOU HAD ANY “WHAT IF I HAD DONE THAT” MOMENTS SINCE YOUR TIME IN CHARGE OF THE COMPANY?
I’ve always thought what would have happened if I had installed a web press. For instance, would I now have 3 web presses running in the factory?
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT IN
THE COMPANY? Achieving one hundred years and having a business that is successful and produces fantastic quality.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR S&G IN THE FUTURE?
As everyone can see we are investing in the latest generation of printing and finishing equipment to remain at the forefront of technology. We will continue with this policy and continue to grow the business.
CAN YOU SWITCH OFF FROM LIFE AT S&G WHEN YOU’RE AWAY FROM THE FACTORY? IF SO,
HOW DO YOU DO IT? Yes and no. The business is always on my mind but I get plenty of relaxation time whilst skiing and spending time with my family.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO SAY
TO YOUR CLIENTS? “We can do anything for you. The only thing we demand is for you to pay us on time!!”
