THE DIAMOND JUBILEE TOUR
HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN, ACCOMPANIED BY HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, VISITED SOUTH WALES ON THURSDAY 26TH APRIL AND FRIDAY 27TH APRIL
Thursday 26th April Her Majesty and His Royal Highness arrived at Cardiff Central Station. They travelled directly to Llandaff Cathedral and attended a Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate Her Majesty’s 60 year reign. The Royal Party then travelled to Margam Country Park where, amongst other activities, met the Grand Slam-winning Welsh rugby team.
The Queen and the Duke also viewed a community festival and had lunch in the Orangery. They then proceeded to Merthyr Tydfil and visited Cyfarthfa High School and Cyfarthfa Castle Museum. The Royal Party also viewed displays by the local Mountain Rescue team, Merthyr Scouts and the Forestry Commission.
Friday 27th April The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened Ynysowen Community Primary School in Aberfan. They then proceeded to Ebbw Vale to officially open the newly refurbished Works General Office and Archives. Here, the Royal Party met former steel workers and museum volunteers. The Queen and The Duke then attended a Service at Christ Church and met community groups in a reception. The Queen and The Duke visited, finally, Glan Usk Estate, near Crickhowell, attending “Diamonds in the Park” – a festival of rural activities and sports.
Whilst The Royal Couple were in Merthyr, a select list of local people had the honour of attending a reception for The Queen and The Duke. These guests included S&G Chairman and Group Managing Director Andrew Jones and Mrs Vanessa Jones. S&G were
commissioned to produce a brochure for the Royal Visit and presented the Royal Couple with a copy. The publication contained details of previous Royal Visits to Merthyr Tydfil and Dowlais and dating back to 1912 when King George V and Queen Mary visited the area in 1912.
> If you would like a copy of this publication, please send a cheque for the amount of £2.50 to S&G Print Group, Goat Mill Road, Dowlais, CF48 3TD payable to Stephens & George Centenary Charitable Trust.
