SINCE ITS IMPLEMENTATION IN 2005, APOGEE PORTAL OUR ONLINE PDF WORKFLOW, NOW ACCOUNTS FOR OVER 60% OF ALL PAGES PROCESSED AT S&G AND OF THAT NUMBER, APPROXIMATELY 90% ARE REGULAR MAGAZINE TITLES
This equates to over 350 different customers who access the system on a daily basis. 25,000 pages or 400 jobs are processed through the system on
a monthly basis. These figures
make S&G the fourth heaviest user of the system in the whole of the UK and also the largest single- site sheetfed user. It is essential that we continue to re-invest in this area. Therefore, S&G
has purchased extra servers and data storage to cope with the increased demand and most recently have purchased extra bandwidth.
This additional
bandwidth means we have increased the download speeds for proofs from Apogee Portal from on average, 30kb/s to over 300kb/s. This will depend on the customers’ bandwidth availability but the greater the capacity they have, the better the result. This is a huge step forward and reaffirms our Company policy of investing in the latest technology in order to benefit our clients. Jamie Awford Pre-
Press Manager said, “Customer satisfaction is always at the forefront of our minds as we want to ensure that our customers’ experience in dealing
with us is as smooth and as efficient as possible. Our re- investment in this area will benefit our clients greatly and allow S&G to cope with the increased volume of workload ensuring that file transfer times are minimal.” Stephen Price, S&G’s IT Manager who headed up the investment programme added, “Merthyr Tydfil has always been compromised by poor internet bandwidth. Historically we have had our nearest point of presence for the internet in Bristol and paid a heavy price to get decent internet bandwidth. Last year whilst researching for
better levels of internet service we were contacted by Virgin Media Business whose network service was extending to Merthyr and they promised to contact us when they were established. Subsequently we were offered a tiered 100Mbs connection running at a full 100Mbs. This was at 25% more cost than the two 4Mbs connections utilised previously. This significant increase in bandwidth means that our pre-press systems are now capable of presenting data to the customer as quick as their connections permit.”
