Argentine plastics conversion rises in 2011
The plastics converting industry in Argentina grew by nearly 9% last year, according to the Argentine Chamber of the Plastics Industry (CAIP). However, while both imports
and production of plastics prod- ucts increased, exports fell slightly, according to Oscar Sanchez, director of CAIP. The figures were released in the run-up to the Argenplas show, which takes place in Buenos Aires on 18-22 June.
Argenplas is organised by CAIP.
Imports of finished and semi-finished products increased by 12% by volume, which equated to 30% in value – to reach nearly $1.4bn. Most imports came from China (32%), Brazil (22%), Chile (9%), USA (6%) and Uruguay (4%). Export volume of these
products fell by 1.6%, though the value of exports actually grew by 11.5% to reach $611m.
The main export markets were Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. Investment in machinery and equipment rose by more than 16% in 2011, reaching $222m. Extrusion machinery accounted for nearly one-fifth of the total. Per-capita consumption of
plastics in Argentina was 43.2kg, maintaining its position as the highest in Latin America, said Sanchez. ❙
