Peek pipe cuts weight of cargo drainage system
PFW Aerospace has devel- oped an aerospace tubing system, using Victrex Peek, for the cargo drainage system of the Airbus A350 XWB. Used for draining
condensed water from the cargo hold, the system was
previously made from metal tubing and connectors. The new system uses Peek for both pipes and fittings. A typical 1in Peek pipe with an outer diameter of 25.4mm and 1 mm wall thickness weighs 100g/m without fittings, delivering a
weight reduction of up to 60% compared to stainless steel. “Given the increasing demands of the industry to reduce weight we needed to identify alternatives to metal,” said Rupert Kästel, vice president of sales and marketing at PFW. The pipes are robust, easy
to install, have good vibration and dampening properties and offer a high degree of design freedom. Victrex will show the Airbus-qualified pipes at the forthcoming Sampe show in Baltimore, USA. ❙

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
Pipes for safe transport
Simona is showing a range of chemically resistant pipe products at the forthcoming Achema exhibition in Germany. Its industrial double-con-
tainment pipe is designed to allow the safe transport of aggressive substances, whether liquid or gas. The piping systems are made of corrosion-resistant materials such as PE, PP and PVDF. Simona offers a range of
material combinations for the carrier pipe and containment pipe, which are tailored to requirements. ❙

FLAME RETARDANTS
PCC extends FlamaSol FR for use in PE
Plastics Color Corporation (PCC) has expanded the use of its FlamaSol FR propri- etary flame retardant technology to polyethylene formulations. The additive masterbatch contains no decaBD.
PCC initially developed the
new additive for PP applica- tions and it plans to further extend its use to PMMA, PS, PVC and other thermoplas- tics. It is suitable for injection moulding, blow moulding and extrusion processes, such as electrical conduit. ❙

Huntsman has developed a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to create cables and power leads for medical environments such as doctors’ surgeries, clinics and hospitals. Irogran A75E 5040DP was formulated to meet the needs of cabling producers such as Sun Round Technology – a Shenzhen-based TPU cable specialist that works with a number of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
The material is a reliable cabling solution with a soft, rubber-like feel. It is resistant to alcohol and TCCA, meaning that cables and other computing peripherals made from it can be cleaned with sterile, antibacterial gels without losing physical properties. Lejun Wang, general manager at Sun Round, said: “Irogran A75E 5040DP provides a variety of production benefits, including a wide processing window.” ❙
