War stories in the parks

PARKS Canada is staging a series of events this year to commemorate the bicentennial of The War of 1812. More than 30 Parks Canada sites

located close to the Canada/US border in the northeast of the country have a connection with a war that saw Great Britain and her Canadian provinces join together to respond to the American declaration of war. Key locations for events include the

Halifax Citadel (Nova Scotia), Battle of the Châteauguay National Historic Site (Québec) and Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site (Ontario). A kick-off event, the 200th

Anniversary Grand Opening Weekend (June 15-18), will be staged in several Parks Canada's sites, as well as the

Gardens set to bloom

CANADA’S parks and gardens are set to bloom with more visitors after the launch of Canada's Garden Route. The brainchild of Michel Gauthier,

who masterminded the Tulip Festival in Ottawa and Garden Festival in Montréal, the initiative aims to raise awareness of Canada’s many public gardens, centres, festivals and trails. “Canada is a country blessed with

fabulous horticulture and this has always been of interest to UK visitors. An international selection on our website features popular attractions such as Vancouver’s Butchart Gardens, Toronto Botanical Gardens and Milner Gardens, but there are lesser-known gardens in every province and territory in the country,” said Gauthier. A self-drive gardens trail was being

developed and a major festival, in Niagara-on-the-Lake, along the lines of Holland’s horticultural expo, Floriade, was being discussed for 2017, he added. www.canadasgardenroute.ca

1812 REVISITED

towns of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Fort Erie and City of Niagara Falls. Events will include recreations of the Declaration of the War of 1812, military music performances, concerts, a gala ball, 1812 military life demonstrations and evening tours. “This year is an especially interesting

time for UK visitors to visit our parks,” said Parks Canada’s Pamela Venoitte. “These are the authentic places

where the dramatic stories of the war unfolded and we are recognising this highly significant period in Canadian history by hosting several events and activities, including some dramatic re-enactments,” she added. For details of planned events see www.parkscanada.com

Yukon targets the UK

THE Yukon’s new tourism director for the UK says the territory known for its wilderness and wildlife experiences will be more proactive in the UK. “We need to achieve more and the

starting point for this is to locate and train a dedicated group of retailers… we’ll be looking at appointing a UK GSA and will be considering training initiatives for agents,” said Market Manager Robin Anderson. New resorts in the Yukon include the

Northern Lights Resort and Spa, close to Whitehorse, where guests can hike, fish and mountain bike by day and enjoy a massage, Finnish sauna, dinner and views of the setting sun in the evening. On offer from Timberline Wilderness

Adventures is a stay at a private ‘fly-in’ lake in a luxury lodge, where guests enjoy dinners of caribou and moose prepared by an award-winning First Nation’s cook and activities such as fishing, wildlife viewing and photography. www.travelyukon.com
