The move towards smaller and more frequent deliveries to reduce inventory according to JIT and Kaizan philosophies, particularly for trackside storage in automo- tive industry is having a signifi cant infl uence on the type of load handling unit being used. The automotive industry in particular is replac- ing its old, cumbersome metal stillages with more cost-effective and user-friendly contain- ers. A popular solution is to consolidate larger quantities of small parts into heavier, containers, such as 500kg, half Euro pallet
size units. These units have integral pallet feet allowing them to be easily delivered by a pallet truck straight to the lineside ready for picking. Pick doors on the short or long side of the container – depending on how to utilise the lineside space most effectively - make these units easy to pick from. BITO is seeing a lot of interest in these types of units across its global operation.
