Hyster proves that UK forklift manufacturing is getting stronger with intelligent designs and award-winning production quality.
pproximately 14,000 fork lift trucks are manufactured each year at the NACCO Materials Handling Group
(NMHG) factory in Craigavon, Northern Ireland. In April, the international materials handling press descended on the plant for the Hyster “Promise to Proof” event designed to provide evidence of the Hyster promise. SHD was invited to inspect a range of trucks, tour the production line and examine quality procedures, interview key personnel and join in presentations about how Hyster and its distribution partners connect with forklift users to provide application-specific solutions. The Craigavon factory is the European source for: • 1.5 - 2.0 3 & 4 wheel, 2.2 - 3.5 tonne Hyster Electric counterbalanced forklifts;
• 1.6 - 2.0, 2.0 - 3.5 & 4.0 5.5 tonne Hyster Internal Combustion (IC) counterbalanced forklifts;
• 1.3 - 1.5 tonne rear wheel drive Hyster Electric counterbalanced forklifts. Eighty-three per cent of all products manufactured in Craigavon are exported to Europe, Russia, Africa and the Mid- dle East, making the site a significant contributor to the UK’s export drive.
The 35,896 sq m (386,241 sq ft) fac-
tory opened in 1981; it now employs over 600 people and is the most verti- cally integrated NMHG facility world- wide. It has seen significant investments in the last couple of years and maintains a philosophy of high volume, low cost, high quality and on-time delivery. In January, The European Founda- tion of Quality Management awarded the plant the prestigious Northern Ireland Quality Award 2011. “This was a fantastic achievement and demonstrates the quality of Hyster equipment manufactured in the UK,” says Carole Stalker, manufacturing quality processes manager, explain- ing that continuous improvement is central to the manufacturing process with Six Sigma initiatives running through the manufacturing operation. Hyster benefits from the expertise and resources of a global manufacturing organisation, with operations in 12 loca- tions across the globe producing quality components and assembling complete trucks for different world markets. All manufacturing sites are ISO certified and employ world-class manufacturing tech- nology and state-of-the-art processes, in- cluding Demand Flow Technology (DFT).
The Craigavon plant makes a significant contribution to the overall NMHG output.

From humble beginnings in Durban, South Africa in 1902, Barloworld has grown to become a multinational corporation with representation in 26 countries, providing world-class solutions in the industrial equipment, automotive and logistics sectors. Last year, Barloworld Ltd reported impressive year-end results, with annual revenue up 22% to R49,823m (£4.5bn). It all started when Ernest (Billy) Barlow, a major in the British army, went to South Africa during the Boer War of 1899-1902. After the war, Billy stayed in the country and founded Thomas Barlow & Sons in Durban, initially selling woollen goods and, within five years, engineering components. In 1929, Billy’s son “Punch” approached Hyster, based in the USA, and secured the materials handling dealership in South Africa, a
