PRODUCT NEWS Enpirion’s new EN5339

combines increased power density and low noise with fastest time to market for embedded computing & industrial applications

Avnet Abacus introduces the EN5339 from Enpirion claimed to be the smallest 3A point-of-load DC-DC converter. Targeting embedded computing applications as well as solid-state drives the EN5339 3 Amp power system-on-a-chip integrates the controller, power MOSFETs, compensation network and inductor into one highly compact solution that significantly reduces the engineering and design effort traditionally associated with discrete DC-DC converter designs.

Keeping up with the demands of embedded, industrial and storage applications, the EN5339 enables a 20% solution footprint reduction and a 40% lower profile compared to previous Enpirion 3 Amp products. With a footprint of just 55mm² and a profile of just 1.1mm, the EN5339 is particularly suitable for high-density embedded computer-on-modules which, in particular, require this small area and a low profile to enable under-side PCB mounting. The POL converter is suitable for equipment based on a diverse range of form factors such as Ultra COM Express, PC104, Qseven, ATCA Advanced Mezzanine Cards (AMC), Compact PCI and others.

Industry’s smallest 3A POL DCDC

converter from Avnet Abacus saves design iterations

Mark Cieri, Enpirion’s director of marketing and business development commented: “I was told by a hardware engineering manager at a leading European embedded computer maker that his most difficult design challenge was fitting both the processors and discrete DC-DC converters onto the same card.” Enpirion PowerSoCs require fewer design steps with significantly less exposure to design cycle iteration. Fully validated and proven PCB layout and design files are

provided enabling customers nearly 100% first-pass reported success. Additionally EN5339’s low ripple (6mV) and EMI eliminate the need for external noise filters, while its thermal performance and construction negate the need for heatsinks. These two factors combine to reduce component count. Enpirion PowerSoCs achieve 21,800 years MTBF, and the high-efficiency devices are industrial-graded so they do not require load de-rating at 85degC ambient temperature. Alan Jermyn, VP European Marketing at Avnet Abacus said:

“Enpirion’s leading edge development of Integrated DC/DC switching solutions are one of the reasons design engineers are turning to Avnet Abacus when they are looking to design the power system for their new projects. We offer innovative solutions that help engineers differentiate their products.”

World’s thinnest piezoelectric speaker

now available from avnet abacus Avnet Abacus, one of Europe’s leading interconnect, passive, electromechanical and power distributors, is now stocking Murata’s VSLBF2115E1100, believed to be the world’s smallest piezoelectric speaker. Measuring just 0.5mm in thickness the products are ideal for use in assemblies with confined space. Commented Alan Jermyn, Avnet Abacus’

VP European Marketing: “We are seeing more and more electronic products that need to include high quality audible functionality, and Murata has enhanced the audio characteristics of this ultra thin piezoelectric speaker.” By optimizing the product’s structure and

the use of new materials it has been possible to reduce distortion and increase sound pressure level without any change in the speaker’s size. Distortion has been reduced by

50 % in the voice frequency region of 2 to 4 kHz. Sound pressure improvements have been

made in the low frequency regions of 1 kHz and below. Using a piezoelectric device within the

speaker means that no magnetic elements need to be used. This greatly aids design since no electromagnetic interference is created

and it also reduces the likelihood of magnetic particles contaminating the speaker surface.
