TRAVEL WEEKLY International Luxury Travel Market Asia 2012 | www.iltm.net/asia What is high-end travel all about?

I recall recently working on a piece about high-end, luxury travel. My focus was on the luxury hotels, private yachts, helicopters and expensive wines, simply because when tailor making a luxury vacation, these are the activities and experiences that spring to mind. I believe when considering luxury travel, these elements are widely recognised as high-end luxury.

Following a survey dedicated to discovering where the high-end travel agencies – by definition, tailor-making holidays for the wealthy elite - place their emphasis, we discovered that in fact the answers were very different to our perception.

In their opinion, it appeared that high-end luxury travellers are seeking satisfaction for the heart and soul and not simply specific luxury experiences. They revealed that as part of their discussions, the most commonly asked question is ‘How are we going to feel?’ and not ‘What are we going to get?’

This survey is a great example of what is really important to the high-end luxury traveller. They want more from their journey; it is not all about the superficial, but more the experience and discovery. This is a challenge as well as a great opportunity for these bespoke travel agencies; the real luxury experience is about touching the heart, the mind and the soul.
