The landscape is changing drastically for the Indian traveller


High oil prices and increasing taxes on travel and airports would suggest a dip in travel; instead, experts predict stable, reliable, high growth. Indian carriers like Indigo are adding international routes; international airlines like Virgin are restarting services.


Data shows that Indians are continuing to travel aggressively and have emerged as the top source of inbound visitor traffic into Asian destinations like Dubai. Hotel occupancy by Indians has also shown a 10% year-on- year increase. In Malaysia, they’re sixth in terms of volume, but the highest spenders.


Mauritius Tourism figures show that over 75% of the Indians who travel there opt for luxury accommodations and spend heavily on adventure activities. The daily spend by Indians is the highest at USD 360.

The rightfully famous Indian destination weddings and over-the-top honeymoons are becoming even more exotic. These success stories are prompting destinations from Fiji to Canada and Trinidad & Tobago to set up representation in India and lure the luxury traveller. Hospitality-wise, major international chains like Shangri La, Dusit, Sofitel, Kempinski and Fairmont are launching properties in India this very year. Dozens of others like Setai, Lebua, Rotana, Ritz Carlton, W and MGM are already in construction; and Indian hotels like Oberoi and Taj are launching luxury properties abroad this year. All of which means that a new breed of young and increasingly wealthy, brand-conscious traveller is getting a first real taste of luxury. Where they go next could well change the fortunes of many in the luxury travel sector.
