CONDÉ NAST TRAVELER International Luxury Travel Market Asia 2012 | www.iltm.net/asia An evolved luxury

It’s impossible to produce a magazine that looks at travel in all its moods without considering the changing economic climate that we, as global citizens, live in.

With politicians from the U.S. to Europe and nations of Asia working to apply austerity measures – and consumers applying personal restraint— the thought of enjoying infinity pools on, say, Stromboli, can seem like a parallel universe.

Yet, recent research from WTTC found that travel and tourism contributes $2 trillion (US) to the world’s GDP, second only to the banking and financial services industry.

In terms of employment, 98 million people were directly employed by travel and tourism, a sector second only to education in job creation.

In these circumstances, where hospitality is deeply embedded in economies and societies and where its health depends on the degree to which it fulfils travellers passions, aspirations, and desires, it is more important than ever to evaluate how well it rises to that challenge.

During the compilation of Condé Nast Traveler’s iconic Hot List, which recognizes the best new hotels and resorts around the world, our reviewers anonymously visited 172 hotels in 49 countries. The review process of this list is a bellwether moment – an important peek at what destinations are offering as the most innovative places to stay, a predictor of where travellers, our readers, will be headed, and what they’ll be looking for.

This year, we found a great deal of emphasis on refined luxury and simple elegance, as well as the manifestation of the important contemporary values of green travel and sustainability.

From The Pig in Hampshire, England, a locavore estate with 26 shabby- chic guest rooms on one of Britain’s most beloved national parks, to our priciest pick, Abu Camp in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, where tented suites are seamlessly integrated into the natural environment in an area with the most elephants per square mile anywhere in Africa, luxury continues to evolve.

Erstwhile excess has morphed into a focus on streamlined aesthetics, intelligent amenities, and genuinely unforgettable experiences. Luxury travel endures – in understated yet provocative new forms.
