& FLOOR PROTECTION ADVERTORIAL

PROTECT AND REFLECT

Many clients and contractors don’t always have the budget allocated to brand new flooring installations and refurbishments that they once did. In an economic climate which doesn’t show any signs of improving any time soon, many people are focussing on the importance of floorcare and floor protection, which is where Buckeye International come in.

linoleum, they will always apply two coats of sealer, then five coats of polish over a two day period. This is necessary as the seal and several coats require curing time.

There are many different types of floors out there and finding the right product for the desired result can be a time-consuming task. Buckeye International is an innovative leader in the cleaning and maintenance products industry, supplying the latest products from chemicals and disinfectants to floorcare. Operating through selected distributors, they impart their knowledge and expertise during specialised training sessions, ensuring the best end results for the end user.

The science starts with the initial on-site visit to establish what type of floor needs caring for. Once this is identified, the next question is: “How do you want the floor to look?” The most common answers include: shiny,

clean, modern, as well as the need for the floor to stay safe, protected and slip-free. Of course, all of these specifications are achievable when the right products and the right procedures are used.

Buckeye have various floor strippers, floor sealers and floor polishes to accompany the current, wide-spread cleaning equipment without further capital outlay, or increase in labour time or cost and the company pride themselves on the high quality of floorcare products at competitive pricing. In most instances they will offer to carry out a test area, this involves the removal of the current protection to the floor, followed by the rebuild of the floor with seven coats of polish. With old established floors or

Upon completion, they explain why it is important to use their cleaning and floor maintenance programme. They train the cleaning operatives on how to use and maintain the floors. The test time is between four to six weeks - during this time, numerous onsite interactions take place in order to determine that the floorcare programme we specified is the right one for them.

The art of achieving a perfect floor appearance is by training the people who are responsible for stripping floors and reapplying polish. There appears to be a wide variety of methods when applying sealer and polish to floors. The Buckeye way is to use a cotton rayon mop; this gives a more even coat of sealer or polish.

When it comes to adding further coats, a common question people always ask is: “How do you measure the correct amount of product for the floor?” Most people have raised their eyebrows when give their answer - seven coats of polish. A common response to this answer is that they are using a lot of product. This is in fact

a myth, as you build up the coats you actually use less product. It’s all about protecting your investment and enhancing the appearance of your floor and essentially your building.

After the initial major strip- out process, and the rebuild of the coats of polish, even with the best maintenance programme you will notice the top layer of polish is looking somewhat worn, particularly where you have a significant amount of footfall traffic. There is a simple solution; all you need to do is scrub and recoat with a less aggressive product. Buckeye suggest that you perform a scrub and recoat without using a stripping product, and they suggest using a less alkaline solution at a dilution of 1:12 with a blue or green floor pad, followed by several coats of polish. This should then be left to cure for 24 hours, leaving you free to proceed with your general cleaning and maintenance schedule. By following their floorcare programme, you will not have to carry out a full strip-out for a minimum 12 to 36 months or, in certain instances, beyond that.
