The accommodation on offer in
Croatia is just as varied, according to John Dixon, chairman and managing director of Essentially Prestige who added: “We feature everything from luxurious fi ve-star hotels to aparthotels, all-inclusive properties, self-catering apartments and even lighthouses.” A new attraction this year is Veliki
Tabor Castle, which has reopened following a four-year restoration project costing more than £5 million. Perched on a hill in Desinic, the fairytale castle is one of the most signifi cant cultural monuments in the Zagorje region north of Zagreb.
Another historic gem is the newly converted Lovran Tower, now a museum gallery displaying historic pictures of the Kvarner region and offering panoramic views over the bay and Ucka nature park.
This pretty destination can be combined with a visit to nearby Opatija which was under Venetian rule for hundreds of years and has a very Italian fl avour.
Investment will continue apace in 2013 when Croatia joins the EU and receives more than £125 million from European funds to spend on its tourism product.
With a warm climate Croatia is a year-
round destination and its many attractions include a necklace of 1,244 islands strung along its stunning coastline

Walking in Istria... by Jeannine Williamson
“As we set off along the forest track we wondered how long it would be before we found our quarry – or if we’d find it at all. But with the able noses of Mito and Tik on the scent it was only a matter of minutes before we were well and truly on the truffle trail. "Two hours later we sat down to an al fresco lunch, grating generous shavings of earthy treasures over bowls of thick ribbon pasta served up by the dogs’ owner Denis Tikel, whose family now run one of Istria’s burgeoning agro-tourism homestays. We ate at chic restaurants serving up gourmet tasting menus from around £30.
"Set amongst vineyards and olive groves the heart- shaped Croatian peninsula is a food lover’s dream and with direct flights to Pula, the region’s largest city, Istria is also very accessible.”
