Visit Scotland has had some emotive adverts on television lately, showing epic sweeping glens, white-sand beaches and vibrant nightlife. I hoped to include some of this on my own

trip up north this Easter, fl ying into Inverness and out of Edinburgh. The week before the bank holiday Scotland received a huge dump of snow – not the news you want to hear when you’ve just booked a static caravan in Scotland’s most popular ski resort Glencoe. Luckily, on arrival at tiny Inverness Airport the air was fresh but the snow was fast melting. Our fi rst night was spent in a tiny B&B next to the Falls of Foyers, a crashing waterfall which winds its way down to Loch Ness, where snow- capped mountains capped the panorama. The next day was on to Glencoe, taking in many lochs and abandoned castles in-between. As we neared the weather turned. But no one should worry about rain in Scotland. Here, the brown, barren landscape soars from sloping valleys and melts into the back clouds, releasing rivers and waterfalls that just add to the drama. On to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs

National Park, further south and an entirely different feel. There’s still twisting roads ending in dramatic views, but it’s greener, more wooded and we got glimpses of huge period houses with leafy lawns and fi elds with shaggy red highland cattle. I hadn't expected butternut squash wellington and Sauvignon Blanc in the middle of nowhere, but that’s what we got at the Inversnaid, a 19th century church, converted into quality budget accommodation. Lastly, just an hour away, are the cobbled
