2 2012. Construction began in 2006 and when it opens the city’s Tegel and Schönefeld airports, which have both been operating over capacity, will simultaneously close. BBI is designed to have a fi nal
capacity of 50 million passengers a year, and a railway station underneath the terminal building will connect the airport to Berlin’s city centre, other regions in Germany and Eastern European countries including the Czech Republic and Poland.
In keeping with Germany’s current green credentials, the aim is for 50 per cent of the airport’s passengers to arrive by public transport. To coincide with the airport opening,
Lufthansa is expanding services to the UK with new Manchester and Birmingham fl ights. Lead-in fares cost £39 one way and £79 return inclusive of taxes and charges. The German National Tourist offi ce also recently re-launched its www.
germany.travel website, showcasing
the country’s highlights, with practical information, less text and more images.

Klaus Lohmann Director UK & Ireland German National Tourist Offi ce
“British leisure and business travellers increased by nearly three per cent in 2011 compared to 2010 fi gures, almost equalling the high of 4.3 million overnight stays in 2006 when Germany hosted the football World Cup. “December showed the greatest increase due to Christmas markets proving incredibly popular; and around 16 per cent of holidaymakers book their trip through a travel agency. “We are very excited to be promoting wine heritage and nature as our 2012 tourism campaign. 'Fine wine and good times’ is aimed at inspiring wine lovers who appreciate culture and natural scenery to take a holiday in Germany’s wine regions, a wonderful and underestimated side of the country. “An advertising campaign in consumer titles, TV programme and a wine promotion with Waitrose supermarket are also planned to boost the campaign.”

Travel Counsellor “Germany is a much more relaxed and welcoming
country than people imagine. With great rail and road infrastructure it’s an easy destination to explore and there are plenty of low-cost airlines to get clients there. The quality of German beer is very high and although many people don’t realise it, the same now applies to the country’s wines.”
Julie Craig
Managing Director, DERTOUR “DERTOUR has been operating in the UK for
over 50 years and our staff have expert knowledge of the country. We can offer tailor-made holidays to meet agents’ needs, or make suggestions for a specifi c client. “From river cruises to extreme sports, historical monuments to pulsating nightlife, Germany can cater for all ages and tastes. There are so many options available.
“If your clients want to fl y into
Cologne and the fl ight’s full, then look at fl ying to Düsseldorf and transfer by rail. If clients want a beer festival it doesn’t need to be Munich as Hamburg, Berlin and Stuttgart are all suitable alternatives. Look to upsell, too. There’s not usually a great difference in price between three- and four-star hotels, or fi rst- and second- class on the train.”
Tahir Bhimani Director
The German Travel Centre “Germany is a safe, year-round destination.

Language may be perceived as a barrier, however most Germans speak good English. There’s more to the cuisine than pork sausages and bratwurst, too, with as many excellent restaurants as one would expect from a well- developed tourism product. Travel agents can easily dynamic package the destination, for example when booking a skiing trip through GTC agents can book fl ights, bolt on car rental, train fares, plus accommodation in skiing resorts especially around Munich.”
